Aadhar Card Of Ayurveda: Prakriti (Body Type)

Prakriti means manifestation of special characteristics due to predominance of Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), the functional components of the body). All the physiological processes are directly controlled by Vata, Pitta and Kapha (three body humors) thus a healthy status can be maintained by maintaining the normality of Prakriti.

By knowing & identifying our ayurvedic body type, Prakriti, we can determine the strength & internal capacity of a person to combat lifestyle diseases as people with equilibrium in Prakriti are said to be the ones with the best immunity and strength. Every healthy individual should know about his/her Prakriti, so that they may know the correct health and lifestyle practices and eating habits best suited to them, so that they may live an ‘aarogya‘, or disease free life. For e.g., if a person is found to have a Pitta predominant Prakriti, he is advised to avoid heat food items that cause more heat in the body.

In my clinical practice, I recently encountered a case of PUO (pyrexia of unknown origin – fever with an unknown cause) For one whole year, she had undergone all types of investigations, got admitted in various hospitals, took many antibiotic courses but could not get relief. By giving her anti-pitta medicines and correcting her diet (which was extremely pitta aggravating), her temperature became normal in just 3 days. This is only possible if we know the Prakriti and the current dosha state of the patient.

By identifying the prakriti of each individual, one can assess the strength of a person to combat various lifestyle diseases. In general, by knowing your Prakriti you can be aware of the recommended Dos and Donts for your daily routine and what type of disorders or ailments your body can possibly have in the future. There is a correlation between specific Prakriti and lifestyle disorders. According to the type of Prakriti, Ayurveda describes daily regimen (Dinacharya), seasonal regimen (Ritucharya) and social code of conducts (Sadavritta) to keep the body in a healthy state. While there is a lot of information to be found on google and the internet in general on identifying your prakriti, it is always best to consult an Ayurvedic Doctor for correct prakriti analysis and dietary as well as regimen recommendations.
