Can Ayurvedic Treatment Cure PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS in abbreviated form, is recognized as a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outside.

The incidence of PCOS is on the rise across the globe. The last 10 – 15 years have seen a sharp increase in the number of PCOS patients in India as well. While many factors can be responsible for this, the main reason for this is today’s lifestyle and unhealthy food habits. A sedentary lifestyle gives way to slow digestive fire or agni. Add to this the regular consumption of junk food, dairy etc and we end up being overweight with slow metabolism. Misguided usage of hormonal and contraceptive pills may also be a contributing factor. In addition to all these, the very nature of the fast paced lives we lead today cause a lot of stress, especially for women, as they juggle tirelessly between the responsibilities of work and home, without any real physical exercise.

It is generally maintained that PCOS can only be managed with medication and not be ‘cured’, but is that really the case? Well, not according to the ancient science of ayurveda.

According to Ayurveda, PCOS is a disorder of kapha blocking the Artava vaha srotus (channels) and causing interrupted movement of Apana-Vata. Due to this, vata imbalance occurs in the pelvic area leading to various symptoms.

What are some common symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

  • Irregular periods. – A lack of ovulation prevents the uterine lining from shedding every month.

  • Heavy bleeding – The uterine lining builds up for a longer period of time, so the periods you do get can be heavier than normal.

  • Hair growth – More than 70 percent of women with this condition grow hair on their face and body.

  • Acne – Male hormones can make the skin oilier than usual and cause breakouts on areas like the face, chest, and upper back.

  • Weight gain – Up to 80 percent of women with PCOS are overweight or obese.

  • Male-pattern baldness – Hair on the scalp gets thinner and fall out.

  • Darkening of the skin – Dark patches of skin can form in body creases like those on the neck, in the groin, and under the breasts.

  • Headaches – Hormone changes can trigger headaches in some women.

How we diagnose PCOS

PCOS is mostly easily diagnosed. The typical and standard symptom is of irregular menstrual cycles that can need consumption of medication to induce a period. Most of the time, a vaginal ultrasound (TVS) is done for clarity. Blood tests are also performed to check for abnormal hormonal levels.
